
Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture and crop cultivation simultaneously in one integrated system. The source of plant nutrition for cultivation of vegetables and fruit comes from the fermentation of manure from fish farming which is channeled to the plants, then the water from the plants is returned to the fish pond.
Organic aquaponics is a way of producing vegetables and fruit in a sustainable manner without using synthetic fertilizers & pesticides, growth hormones and antibiotics in fish and plant cultivation.
ICERT develops organic aquaponics certification for vegetable and fruit production based on the ICERT Organic and Natural Aquaponics Standard. This standard was prepared with reference to the FAO Guidelines for aquaponic production and SNI 6729: 2016 on Organic Farming Systems.
“Aquaponics can be an alternative cultivation of vegetables, fruit and fish at the same time in limited land and water sources,” said Budi S Pranoto, the owner of BSP Farm which oversees PT Kapol Antar Nusa-Aquaponic Unit.
“Aquaponics enables the cultivation of nutritious vegetables and fruit and also raises edible fish. Hopefully this aquaponic model can be imitated by the wider community”, he hoped during granting certificate of organic aquaponics from ICERT to PT Kapol Antar Nusa-Aquaponic Unit, at the Kapol farm in Pasir Jaya Cijeruk village, Bogor in 18 November 2020.
Agung Prawoto as the director of ICERT said that the organic aquaponics certificate would be encouragement for the development of organic aquaponics in Indonesia and asked that Kapol continue to meet the requirements of the ICERT Organic and Natural Aquaponics Standard consistently.
Located at the foot of Mount Salak in Cijeruk Bogor, Kapol develops an organic aquaponic production area of 512 m2 for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits with three fish ponds with 36 m2 each. Kapol is the first certified producer to obtain organic aquaponics certification in Indonesia.
