THE GLOBAL ORGANIC MARKET HAS PASSED THE 100 BILLION US DOLLAR

Organic food sales surpassed the 100 billion US dollar in 2018. The countries with the largest organic markets were the United States (51 billion US dollar or 42 percent), followed by the European Union (45 billion US dollar, 38.5 percent), and China (8.8 billion US dollar, 8.3 percent).

It was conveyed by FiBL and IFOAM in The World Of Organic Agriculture Statistics & Emerging Trends 2020 which were launched at the World’s Largest Organic Product Exhibition [Biofach] which is conducting on 12-15 February 2020 in Nuremberg Germany.

In 2018, the U.S imported 1,737,568 tons of organic products, or 2,188 billion US dollar. Based on USDA-FAS data, the U.S  imported organic products from Indonesia was 5,932.6 tons or valued at USD 37 million with commodity of arabica coffee [5,885.1 tons or USD 36 million] and rice [47.5 tons or less than USD 1 million].

In the same year, the EU imported a total of 3.3 million tonnes of organic agri-food products. Imports of tropical fruit (fresh or dried), nuts and spices represented the single biggest category, totalling 793’597 tonnes or 24.4 percent of total imports, followed by oilcakes (352,043 ton, 10.8 percent),, cereals (255,764 ton, 7.8 percent], wheat (243,797 ton, 7.5 persen), and rice (216,017 ton, 6.6 persen).
